January Birchbox

A few months ago I started subscribing to a monthly subscription of Birchbox. Basically, every month they send you 5 personalized samples related to makeup, skincare and hair. For the last few months, I’ve been mostly satisfied with what I’ve gotten for $10 a month. It gives me a chance to try new products out, especially since I don’t really have much of an opportunity to otherwise.

I think the box for this month was cute, but it’s not my favorite.

Mineral Face SPF 30 Unscented Matte Tint | Full-size, $36
A mineral-based BB cream that hydrates, evens skin tone, protects from UV rays, and has a matte finish. Shake bottle before using, then smooth a thin layer onto face.

My thoughts: I liked the feel of this going onto my skin, it felt like it wasn’t even there. However, I have really dry skin, and I could see my skin flaking in parts. So I’m not a big fan of this.

Sebium Pore Refiner | Full-size, $19.90
This ultralight fluid combats shine and minimizes the appearance of pores thanks to an astringent-like agaric acid. Apply all over or to oily areas after cleansing.

My thoughts: I liked the smell of this a lot, and it felt smooth on my skin. However, I didn’t really notice much of a difference, and that may be because my skin is more dry than oily in the winter.

Smashbox Cosmetics
Always On Liquid Lipstick – Driver’s Seat | Full-size, $24
This warm pink matte liquid lipstick stays in plays all day, yet remains hydrated with the help of the brand’s primer oil complex.

My Thoughts: I haven’t tried an all day use of this yet, but when I did try it on, I loved the way it looked. It stayed on, and I’m not used to having a lipstick that doesn’t come off just from basic use after an hour. So for me, this one was my favorite out of the entire box.

The Beauty Crop
Espresso Yourself Eyeshadow Trio | Full-size, $29.90
This trio from the java-inspired Espresso Yourself Eyeshadow Palette makes creating subtle or smoky looks easy. Plus, coffee extract in the formula helps reduce puffiness on lids.

  1. Highlight – Vanilla Latte
  2. Blend & Shadow – French Roast
  3. Define & Line – Midnight Blend

My Thoughts: I really liked the colors in this palette. I prefer neutral colors. The colors blended well when I used them, and it lasted me all through my work shift. I’ll be using this again!

Beauty Protector
Protect & Volume | Full-size, $23.50
Get a boost of volume and shine with this weightless mist. Along with major body, it will also provide a layer of protection against heat damage.

My Thoughts: Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t notice much of a difference than any other heat protect product. It smelled good and felt nice on my hair, though, so it does work and I will be using it.

As of right now, I get enough products that I do like from Birchbox that I will be keeping up my subscription for now. However, I’m liking my ipsy products better, and may eventually cancel this subscription.

Have you ever tried this box? What were your thoughts?

As a side note, I am using this as my daily post today, because I felt uninspired to do my topic today, “My Life From A Different Perspective.” Be sure to look out for an ipsy post next week as well!

    1. I decided to try them out to treat myself lol. I’m basically a newbie when it comes to beauty products so I’ll take all the samples I can get for now. Ipsy is definitely nicer though (: but Birchbox gives me a few things that make me keep subscribing to it lol

    1. Ahh I gotcha! I’d start cancelling if they wind up doing the same thing for me, too. They have monthly curated boxes now, too, I got the December one. But this month and next month they didn’t have anything I really wanted lol. How is the Sephora box? Is it worth it?
